Studies performed to date indicate that the elderly are at highest risk for chronic inflammatory diseases, malnutrition, pressure injury and non-healing wounds. Contributing factors include reduced nutrient uptake as a result of aging and poor nutrient intake due to a variety of conditions such as poor dentition, dysphagia, poverty, chronic illness, polypharmacy and depression. As a result, the likelihood of mortality for older individuals with wounds remains high. Younger individuals with inflammatory malnutrition also experience reduced nutrient uptake and intake due to los of gut integrity and anorexia both as a result of unrelieved inflammation.
