The value of low osmolality proteins

It is important to understand the value of having low osmolality liquid proteins. High osmolality can contribute to osmotic diarrhea which, among other things, can result in loss of nutrients. This is why our ProSource TF and ProSource No Carb are virtually isotonic with osmolalities of 355 to 380 Osm/kg. 11444 ProSource TF

But what exactly is osmolality?
The easy answer is that osmolality is the concentration of the body’s fluids. The body normally runs around 300 Osm/kg – so when patients consume foods and liquids like liquid protein with high osmolality (very concentrated) the body tries to get back to homeostasis by dumping large amounts of water into the stomach and intestines. This can cause distention, diarrhea, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and even shock!
What drives osmolality? The main thing is sugar and we know that all of our competitors add glycerin, a form of sugar, to their liquid proteins to be able to make a ‘sugar–free claim’ while raising calories to 100 per serving. However glycerin raises osmolality  to 3,300 and 4,780 Osm/kg which makes it hard to justify the few extra calories!
We know that tube feed diarrhea is a major concern in acute care. And while using a low osmolality liquid protein does not assure that the patient won’t develop diarrhea, we know for certain that it will not contribute to it. Our competitors cannot make the same claim. This is the critical difference,
